The Journal of the Indian Anthropological Society (JIAS) (ISSN no. 0019-4387) is registered under the Press and Registration of Books Act 1867 (Registration number R.N. 16482/67). It is also the official organ of the Indian Anthropological Society, one of the foremost Anthropological organizations of the country. The publication of this Journal started in the year 1966 and is still continuing uninterruptedly for 55 years. The present office of this JIAS is located at ‘Sukhavati Bhawan’, Flat No.2A, P-17A, Ashutosh Chaudhury Avenue, Calcutta-700019. This is also the official address of the Indian Anthropological Society.
For the first 11 years (1966-1975), the Journal used to publish two issues (March and November) each year. Our research shows that on an average the total number of printed pages of JIAS during that time was 200. It soon started gaining academic significance and scholars from across the country and globe started contributing to this Journal. In course of time, the Editorial Board members felt the necessity to increase publication of the number of issues of the Journal from two to three (March, July and November) in the year 1976.
All these years the Journal has tried to maintain a standard with the active support of competent editorial board members. Renowned scholars like, Dilip K Sen, SurajitChandra Sinha, Ajit K Danda served as Editors for JIAS. Arabinda Basu, indefatigably served as the Managing Editor of JIAS from 1969 till the end of 2014. The past Editorial Board members comprised scholars like, Dharani Sen, M.N. Basu, P.C. Dutta, Suhas K Biswas, G.S. Roy, Arabinda Basu, Amitabha Basu, Hirendranath Rakshit, Sabita Ranjan Sarkar, Manish K Raha, Biman Dasgupta, A.R. Banerjee, D.P. Mukherjee, Ashok K Ghosh, Gouranga Chattopadhyay, Ranajit Chakraborty, J.J. Roy Burman, and so on.
The new Editorial Board of JIAS will be constituted by the end of the year 2024.
The Journal is presently indexed with NISCAIR, New Delhi; Indian Documentation Service; Anthropological Index Online to Current Periodicals; and Sociological Abstract; Royal Anthropological Institute,UK. and EBSCO Publishing Inc. This journal has been UGC-CARE listed (under Social Sciences) from the year 2020 till 2024.
Journal of the Indian Anthropological Society is an international multidisciplinary journal and accepts theoretical, empirical and review papers in different areas of Anthropology, Human Biology and other Social Sciences. Apart from these, we also publish book review, obituary, research notes and academic news. So, far the Journal has published articles ranging from Anthropology to Human Biology, Geography, Biochemistry, Linguistics, Sociology, Folklore, Tribal Studies, Political Science, Economics, Art and Media to Aesthetics. The Journal has so far brought out 13 special issues (1970, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1998 two issues, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2014). Some of these special issues include Memorial Volume paying homage to scholars like Nirmal Kumar Bose, P.C. Mahalanobis, S.S. Sarkar and Surajit K Sinha.

So far, JIAS has published 59 volumes till the year 2024. The last issue (November 2024) has already been published.
We are now inviting renowned scholars from India and abroad to write the Editorial of each issue of the journal on a topic that has contemporary relevance in Anthropology and Social Sciences.
JIAS strictly follows its manuscript submission guidelines, which are also available in the website www.indiananthropologicalsociety.org. It is mandatory to submit a Statement of Ethics for each submission. We have a separate email ID (anthsoc09@gmail.com) for making all correspondences relating to the submission manuscript. All the submitted manuscripts are assigned with a manuscript ID, if the Editorial Board (EB) of JIAS finds it suitable for sending the manuscript for external review. As per the record of the last five years, on an average 40 manuscripts per year have been considered for external review. In the year 2024, we received 89 manuscripts and out of which 36 were recommended by the editorial board for external review.
We send each manuscript for a double blind fold review. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two external reviewers. The reviewers are selected from different parts of the country and also overseas. The comments received from our reviewers on the manuscript are forwarded to the corresponding author. We request the author to submit the revised manuscript along with a rebuttal letter addressing each and every comments raised by our reviewers. On the recommendation of the external reviewers and the editorial board members, we finally send the acceptance of manuscript to the authors. The accepted manuscripts are published in chronological order based on the date of acceptance of the manuscript. All communications from the editorial office of JIAS to the authors and the reviewers are made using digital platform. We maintain date wise digital record of each correspondence between the authors and the reviewers. As a mark of acknowledgement, we publish the names of the list of reviewers for a particular year in the last issue of each volume.
So far, the Journal has received financial assistance from Ford Foundation, New York, USA; Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Government of India and Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal.
Presently, the Institutional subscription charge per volume is 2500 (INR) and 150 (US dollars) and that for individual subscription is 1500(INR) and 100 (US dollar).
The Journal is subscribed by many academic institutions of the country and abroad and we are in a continuous process of expansion of the subscription base.
